If It Hadn't Happened in West Virginia ...

... would the news organizations still call the relatives kin?

Well, I imagine there are other states, or at least parts of states, where they might--but not many.

You think it was a conscious choice or unconscious? Which would be worse?

I'm not sure if it was a conscious decision or not.

Really, I don't have a problem with it, and I doubt any West-by-God-Virginians would either. My mom and her family are from West Virginia, so it actually sounds natural to me.

For whatever reason it struck me as odd to see it in a headline, though. The term kin didn't turn up in the version of the story I read, so whoever wrote the headline is the "culprit". But I'm sure it wouldn't show up in a story about Californians!
