Olympic Perspective

National Football League Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw has died. Currently CNN has this news in the big red Breaking News headline at the top of their page.

Michael Phelps had to become the most decorated modern Olympian to get similar treatment. In other words, in America the best Olympian of the modern era is just about as important as a behind the scenes apparatchik from the NFL. The fact that this great Olympian also happens to be American just underscores my point. This partly explain why we're getting clobbered in the Olympic Gold Medal count.

As a devoted Eagles fan, I intensely disliked Gene Upshaw. Also, Upshaw the union leader was only good for current players but not for the retired and ailing ones. The Players Union has ignored past players who are dying younger than ever and are disabled at a faster rate than normal. Thanks to Mike Ditka and others like him, their stories wouldn't have been told.
